The incorporated Village of Valley Stream lies within the Town of Hempstead, bordering Queens, and is served by the Long Island Rail Road at the Valley Stream, Gibson, and Westwood stations. In 2017, Money Magazine ranked Valley Stream as “the best place to live in New York.”

History

In 1640, 14 years after Dutch colonists arrived in Manhattan (New Amsterdam), the Dutch West India Company acquired the area now known as Valley Stream from the Rockaway Native Americans, a Lenape or Delaware band identified by their place of residence.

Despite population concentrations to the west for the next two centuries, this woodland area remained undeveloped. The 1840 census recorded about 20 families, most of whom owned large farms. During that period, the northwest section was referred to as “Fosters Meadow.” The present-day business section on Rockaway Avenue earned the moniker “Rum Junction” due to its taverns. The northern section, known for its risqué character, was called “Cookie Hill,” while the part of the northeast housing the local fertilizer plant was labeled “Skunks Misery.” Hungry Harbor, a section retaining its name, was home to a squatters’ community.

Geography

As per the United States Census Bureau, the village covers a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2), with 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) being land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2), or 0.86%, consisting of water.

Valley Stream shares its borders with several communities, including Elmont (home to Belmont Park racetrack), Lynbrook, Malverne, Franklin Square, Hewlett, Woodmere, and Rosedale (a neighborhood in Queens, New York City).
